Our Batiks

What is batik?

Batik is tradition that involves the application of wax resin and fabric dye to craft captivating motifs and patterns. This ancient technique started on the island of Java in Indonesia centuries ago but has since spread to other parts of Southeast Asia. Singapore and Malaysia have their own batiks with different colors and motifs.

How is your batik made?

The batiks here are created using a batik cap (stamped) method. Copper stamps featuring beautiful motifs are dipped into hot wax, then manually stamped on fabric creating neat, repetitive patterns.

Artisans hand paint selective areas using dye, then they remove the wax by dipping the entire fabric in boiling water. This process is repeated several times depending on the number of colors needed for the pattern. The cloth is then dried in the sun.

Why do you only sell boys batik shirts?

We would like to see if there is a large enough demand for modern kids batiks! If there is, we will start stocking girls batik items soon.

Where do you source your batik from?

We scour Indonesia to find the best kids brands for batik. Currently we source from HeyTimmy, Baby Kanaka, Kids & Kiddo and Little Malik.

What if there's a design I like but no more stock?

Unfortunately, the batiks were purchase are made in small batches. This means there are limited styles in limited sizes.

If there's a design you like but no stock, email us at hello@dotsanddribble.com and we will try to work directly with the brand to see if we can find something for you.

What makes your batik different from other shops?

We look for the brightest, most fun, batik patterns for kids. That means pastel colors, bigger motifs that you can see from afar, and designs that can be easily paired with basics.

Kids should be able to turn cartwheels, party hard and still look presentable in our batiks.

Product Care

How do I wash my batik?

  • Machine wash gentle or hand wash with mild detergent in cold water.
  • Best to wash inside out
  • Wash with like colors
  • Do not bleach.
  • Do not tumble dry. Hang your batik away from direct sunlight.
  • Steam or iron your batik

What can I do if my batik is stiff?

Our products will soften the more you wash. Do not use bleach as this will make the batik more stiff.

Will my batik fade?

Some dye may run during the first wash but not after that.

Why are there brown spots on my batik?

Nothing to worry about! This is just leftover wax residue on the shirt. Simply wash it away with mild detergent and water until it's gone.
